Over the weekend, Turkish media outlets publicized the story of a 15-year-old from a village in Elîh, who was detected to be pregnant in a hospital she went to suffering abdominal pain. According to reports by the state-owned media outlets, the 15-year-old had been impregnated after being raped by two people. An investigation carried out by Jinnews News Agency revealed that the child had been raped by a total of 27 men, a list which includes the names of specialist sergeants, police and village guards.
The scandal drew mass attention to the Turkish state’s policies of rape and forced-prostitution in Kurdish cities, the news being circulated by millions of people on social media platforms such as Twitter.
Reacting to the revelation, a broadcast ban was imposed on the Jinnews article by Turkish courts. Shortly after, the General Directorate of Security, the institution of the invading Turkish Republic, announced that an investigation was initiated against those spreading the article on social media.
The Batman Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office made a statement on the subject, saying nothing about the detainment or punishment of the listed 27 rapists. Instead, he announced that 27 people who spread the article were arrested for spreading “false information.”
In the statement made by the Occupying Governorship, people spreading information about the scandal were threatened:
“It is alleged in some media organizations and social media platforms that our soldiers, police and village guards were involved in the incident in a completely false and purposeful manner. It was stated that a criminal complaint will be filed against media organizations that continue to broadcast despite the decision of the Gercüş Criminal Court of Peace and those who try to spread these fake news on social media.
