ESCUELITA ABYA YALA – KURDISTAN
Weaving paths toward democratic modernity
“The old world is dying. The new is slow to appear. And from this contrast monsters arise”
Antonio Gramsci
“We believe in the urgency of strengthening creative and radical opposition against these “great monsters that move strongly.” Day after day, global resistance grows and advances in the construction of democratic alternatives: the popular protests of recent years, the strengthening of women’s movements around the world, the youth movement for climate justice, the struggle against racism, white supremacy, and strikes in industry and agriculture. Humanity is awakening and a new world is pulsating in many corners of the world.
However, while “Capitalist Modernity” is a highly organized and global system, the alternative often remains somewhat disorganized, fragmented, and lacking a strategic and unifying proposal for a common organization. This is why we believe in the importance of creating a new understanding of democratic politics and a new political-moral consciousness, which constitute the foundations of a free society, in order to create and expand networks and connections between democratic forces. Therefore, through the creation of forums and platforms, we will contribute to the strengthening of the international exchange of experiences and the connection between struggles.
With great joy and enthusiasm, we invite you to the presentation of the 1st cycle of Escuelita Abya Yala – Kurdistan. ‘Escuelita’ for wanting to be an alternative to the “school” of the state system and also as an inspiration for the initiative of the Zapatista compas. ‘Weaving paths to democratic modernity’ because the concept of ‘Democratic Modernity’, developed by the Kurdistan Liberation Movement, based on the three pillars of radical democracy, women’s liberation and ecology, can constitute a new orientation and inspiration. Without any homogenizing pretension, but attached to the construction of “a world where many worlds fit”, we believe that making visible and making known the similarities and particularities of the experiences of social self-organization and collective self-defense in the Middle East and Latin America, will favor our education, organization, the strengthening of criticism of what is already in practice, and the thinking about alternatives.
By spreading ideas, developing a theoretical base, mobilizing and articulating existing organizational potentials, we want to pave the way for the construction of an alternative world. We want to learn, get to know each other, exchange, and work together so that our struggles become a reality. Another world is not only possible, but also, in the current reality, indispensable. Together, we need to build the future, because waiting any longer will be disastrous.
On March 17, 2023, we will present this initiative, the day that marks the 5th anniversary of the fall as a martyr of Şêhid Lêgerîn – Alina Sánchez. An Argentinian doctor (she learned her trade at medical university in Cuba), born in 1986, she joined the Kurdish revolution and was tirelessly involved in building an alternative healthcare system and building bridges between Kurdistan and Abya Yala. Her example of revolutionary life and internationalist practice keeps her alive today as an inspiration for compas on both continents.”
