BOGOTA – This March 23, a new day of demonstrations is taking place in Bogota. Hundreds of students from Universidad Distrital, Universidad Pedagógica and Universidad Nacional joined to protest, according to them, for the quality of education and the lack of budget. The mobilizations began in downtown Bogota, in the Seventh Race.
These protested started with approximately 80 to 100 students from the Pedagogical University, who went out to mobilize in the streets demanding that the national government promote a comprehensive reform of higher education in the country. Then, more than 1,000 protesters took 26th Street to reach the Ministry of Education.
They demanded the dissolution of the notorious ESMAD riot police. ESMAD was responsible for many deaths during the 2021 “national strike”. President Gustavo has yet to fulfill his election promise to dismantle the unit.
