Swiss Climate Strike commemorated Elefteria Hambi in a written statement shared on virtual media accounts.
Climate Strike, “Eva Maria Steiger was a German activist active in climate justice and environmental struggles. She was especially involved in the defense of the Hambach forest near Aix-la-Chapelle (Aachen). This forest has been occupied for several years to protect it from the expansion of a coal mine. Steiger was active in anarchist groups. She crossed into North-East Syria in 2018. Since 2012, she has been involved in the social organization of the Kurdish Freedom Movement and its allies, inspired by democratic confederalism. The main purpose here was to strengthen democracy on a local and federal basis, to secure the rights of all peoples in the region without creating new nation-states, and to create a centralized society based on women’s liberation and ecology.
WE SUPPORT DEMOCRATIC CONFEDERALISM
The statement concluded with the following statements: “Although we, as the Climate Strike, do not claim democratic confederalism and do not take a position for a particular party, we welcome and support the ongoing democratic, feminist, multi-ethnic process in Kurdistan and North-East Syria. Eva Maria’s journey reminds us that ecological, feminist and democratic struggles are interconnected and do not stop at state borders. Eva Maria Steiger’s struggle also gives strength to our struggles despite all kinds of violent pressure. Our condolences to his family and comrades. The struggle will continue.”
